When Swan Amity Sheridan asked me to work with her new line of fabrics from @island_batik, I immediately thought of the Double Clamshell Pattern. This easy pattern is perfect for the soothing blues and purples found in Swan’s new line of batik fabrics.
Broken Glass from @island_batik, designed by Kathy Engle for Swan Amity Sheridan of @swanamity is a beautiful new line hitting store shelves this month and you can win one of two fat quarter bundles for your very own!
Batiks are the perfect fabric for Rotary Cut Applique! The batiks hold their edges on raw applique much better than printed cottons. The tightly woven batiks don’t fray as you fuse and stitch the applique edges.
Yes! This quilt is appliqued using Mistyfuse! The Leaves Galore templates make cutting the curved shapes fast and fun as you build this applique quilt block by block.
Are you surprised that this is an applique quilt? Fusible applique is a great substitute for curved piecing when curved piecing is not your thing. I certainly don’t like curved piecing, and this shape would be impossible to do because of the inside point on the block. Applique is the only way! The gentle curves are easy to cut and fast to applique.
I just love the cool colors of the Mediterranean found in Swan’s line of fabric. Just look at those bubbles and the mosaic tiles that look like the bottom of a swimming pool! What a fun way to use this great new line of batiks.
This color combination is just one of the ways I was able to color this quilt. Imagine using hot oranges and sunny yellows for a completely different look. I can’t wait to get my hands on this line of fabrics, so I can make the Broken Glass version of Double Clamshells!
Double Clamshells is our March Workshop for Ahead of the Curve members who are learning new ways to applique! Each month, AOC members get a new live workshop with me to explore a wide variety of Applique Techniques including this block-by-block applique technique.
