UFOs over Schoodic – A Quilt Retreat in Acadia National Park

 

UFOs Over Schoodic, Event Overview: Your hosts, Bev and Irene Henion invite you to attend UFOs over Schoodic, a quilt retreat on the Schoodic Peninsula in Maine.  Acadia National Park is the stunning backdrop for this one-of-a-kind quilt retreat. You will have the chance to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty while indulging in your passion for quilting.

Instructor: Sue Pelland, Quilt Designer, and national teacher will be leading the first week at UFOs over Schoodic.  Sue’s warm and friendly demeanor, combined with her Rotary Cut Applique quilting expertise, makes her the perfect guide for participants of all skill levels. Two Rotary Cut Applique projects will be presented featuring Sue’s unique fusible applique methods.  

The second week is a true UFO retreat where quilters can finish their SPD project or bring other UFOs from home to complete. 

Workshops and Activities:

Welcome Reception: Meet your instructor and other participants at our Opening Night Reception with light
hors d’oeuvres featuring Show and Tell. Sue will bring a select group of quilts to show you how you can utilize the techniques that you learn this week into more beautiful Rotary Cut Applique quilts. Bring your own quilts to share your quilting experiences, and exchange stories. The welcome party creates a wonderful opportunity for networking and forming lasting friendships while celebrating each other’s work.

Cozy Quilting in Slippers: Attendees are encouraged to quilt in their most comfortable slippers in this informal and relaxing atmosphere.  Sue’s laid-back approach to applique enhances the joy of quilting!

Fusible Applique Techniques: Sue’s instruction will focus on various cutting, fusing, and stitching techniques that make traditional curved-pieced quilts a breeze without any curved piecing. Two quilt projects were specifically chosen to give quilters at any skill level instant success. The Rotary Cut Applique technique gives you a faster, easier approach to the traditional methods for making Drunkard’s Path, and Diamond quilts.    

• Drunkard’s Path Wall Quilt: Draw inspiration from the park’s natural beauty, and take home a memory of the sights and sounds of the island.  
• Hope’s Diamond: As you enjoy the quiet side of Acadia National Park, you can watch the creating radiant diamonds of light on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. The Fall leaves will provide a perfect backdrop for our New England retreat. Incorporate ocean hues, or fall shades in your Hope’s Diamond Quilt to bring back a treasured memory of your time at Acadia National Park.

Sewing Space: Each quilter has a 6-foot table space for cutting and sewing. Additional large pressing stations and cutting mats are placed around the perimeter of the sewing room with ample room for pressing and cutting backgrounds and borders.    

Materials and Supplies: Participants are encouraged to bring their own quilting materials and projects. However, Sue will bring a selection of products for those who might need them.

 

Accommodations and Meals: Guests stay in cozy apartments within walking distance of the sewing center and large dining hall.  Each apartment is furnished with a kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and two to four rooms. There is no need to cook or clean, when fabulous meals are provided in the community dining hall. Our final meal together is a traditional Down East Maine Lobster Dinner (Other options available).   

Guided Park Walks: The Schoodic Peninsula offers everything from challenging hikes to quiet evening strolls.  There are many opportunities for participants to get some fresh air, exercise, and even more inspiration for their quilt designs. In addition to quilting sessions, Sue will guide you on her favorite walk along the Sundew Trail.

Relaxation and Meditation: Alongside quilting activities, participants have time to engage in relaxation and meditation amidst the tranquil surroundings of Acadia National Park.

 

Who Can Attend: This retreat is open to quilters of all skill levels, from beginners looking to learn the basics of Rotary Cut Applique to advanced quilters seeking inspiration and a change of scenery.
