Thimble Pleasures Quilt Guild Modern Challenge

Sue, Donna, and Linda Gosselin, a SPD Certified Instructor, belong to Thimble Pleasures Quilt Guild and we recently revealed our 2016 Challenges. The theme for challenge was "modern".  To participate, we purchased a bag that contained two fat quarters and two crayons.  We had to use both the fabrics in the bag but could add four additional fabrics as long as they matched the colors of the crayons.  The fat quarters were a Kona white and a gray fabric with some circles and helped unify the finished pieces.  The crayons and the limit of four additional fabrics were definitely the challenging part.  There was no requirement to use SPD tools (but wouldn't that be a fun challenge) but of course Sue, Donna and Linda had to figure out a way to incorporate them into the challenge.

Linda's "Return of the Gypsies" represents the awful return of the Gypsy Moth Caterpillars we've had this summer in central Massachusetts.  She noticed one day while driving through Upton that the trees on one side of the road had no leaves and the other did.  She used Leaves Galore templates to make the leaves.  Look closely and you'll see a couched gypsy moth caterpillar on one of the leaves.

Donna named her quilt "Anniversary Rings".  After finalizing the design, she quickly pieced the background and cut the melon shapes with the medium Leaves Galore template.  After fusing, she then spent hours doing the straight line, matchstick quilting!

Sue received a box of Westminster Fabric from our friend Susan Thorton, who now works for this company.  She found turquoise and gold fabric to match her crayons and had no more excuses.  She used the Hearts and More template to make the half circles.  She filled the negative space with lots  free motion quilting.

Have you used any of the SPD tools when working on your own Guild Challenges?  We'd love to see what you've done.  We have a gallery on the website to post your pictures, so please send us any photos of quilts you have made with our tools!

In two days we leave for the AQS show in Syracuse  Will we see you there?

Have a wonderful day being creative with fabric!  Sue Pelland
