Fun with Free Downloads!

I had a wonderful day with my sister, Maria, my Mom and Lois Palmer today at my house. Lois was appraising all my quilts that I use in my business. Here is my plug about appraisals…if you have quilts and they get lost, stolen, burned or flooded, the insurance value is about $20, the cost of a new BLANKET! That is all I have to say. Get them appraised and insured! Lois evaluated my business quilts, but also the beautiful hand applique and hand quilted wedding quilt that my Mom made for Jeffrey and I. I was so glad Mom was here to answer Lois’ questions about the techniques and patterns in the quilt.

Maria is my web designer, and we got together to chat, drink cappuccino and fix some web issues. Today I learned that I can upload PDF files that you can download! You have to go through my shop, but the first download is ready for you to try! Put the download into your shopping basket, check out with paypal (for $0.00) and the download is yours! This first one is set of cutting instructions for making Sunflower, Poinsettia and Daisy flower petals. This is the same supplement that is in the Flowers Galore Place Mat Pattern, but you can get it for free!

Lets try out the free download for a month or two, then I will be adding dowlaodable patterns that you can buy from the website in the near future. How awesome is that!! Going green, saving paper, and saving on shipping costs all at the same time. How can you go wrong?

So go ahead and try it. Download the instrutruction sheet today. This adds to the instructions that come with the template, without having to buy a thing. Just download, print and practice your flowers!

Hope you have fun. Sue
Just for kicks, here is a photo of my recent trip to Europe…

Celebrating Lauren!

Dear Friends, I am off to Europe on Tuesay of next week, but before I go there is much to catch up on! Firstly, for those of you who know my sister Gina, (also known as my right hand lady at quilt shows!) she is getting married on Saturday!! We are so excited for Gina and Jim as they start their life together. Congratulations!!

Love this new book!

Gina has just finished illustrating a book for Quilt Queen Designs owner Patricia Pepe. This book is full of great ideas on using the x-blocks template for simple and wonderful pieced designs. Gina and I have gotten to know Patricia and her daughter Ariel in our quilt show travels. We just love Patricia and think she deserves her title of Quilt Queen!! Congratulations to Patricia on her second book and to Gina who illustrated it!

Now, back to Celebrating Lauren!! Lauren is my 17 year old daughter. Lauren has been accepted at our local community college into the 12th year program. She will finish her Senior year of high school while attending her first year of college. Not a bad two for one deal!! To celebrate her departure from high school, (not really a graduation yet…)we are traveling to Rome and Paris where we will spend one week in each city. We have friends in both cities and will enjoy living like the locals while we vacation.

Joanne Bertrand, my wonderful new employee at Sue Pelland Designs, will be here in MA taking care of all your quilting needs! Joanne will continue to get products out the door and will be helping me get ready for the Mancuso show in Oaks, PA which will be just around the corner when I arrive home from Europe! Our class on Rotary cut Applique is sold out. I hope to offer another class at future shows. I will keep you informed as I get these scheduled.

So until after my much needed vacation, I wish you happy quilting, and happy rest of the summer vacation! Enjoy the beautiful weather and your families….life is too short so get out there and live life! Sue

Mancuso Pennsylvania National Quilt Show

I am pleased to be teaching a half day workshop at Mancuso’s Pennsylvania National Quilt Show in September. If you have purchased your templates from me at other local shows, but haven’t had the chance to try them out yet, this is your class!! Take time for yourself to learn something new, and explore the possibilities open to you with the Leaves Galore Templates. We will not be working on a specific quilt, but will explore several techniques that I use in my patterns. This will give you a good overview, including samples that you can take home, without starting yet another quilt!

Students are encouraged to purchase a template ahead of the class, so you can practice cutting curves at home before the class. This will give you the confidence you need to jump right in and take home lots of class samples. Here are a few examples of what other students made in class.

VERMONT QUILT FESTIVAL

I am very excited to be going to the Vermont Quilt Festival this year!  I was invited to vend after another vendor had back out at the last minute.  I had decided to take July and August off from the trade show/quilt show circuit, but this June 23 to 27 show fits right in my schedule!  I will be demonstrating my Leaves Galore Templates and Quilter’s Chalk Line at my booth all day during the show, so come by and see me!  I hope to see many of my Canadian customers at the show.  I know it is expensive to ship to Canada, so I welcome the chance to sell to my Canadian customers who can carry the product home rather than paying shipping charges.

See my new patterns at the show, including Hope’s Diamond, Promise Ring, Eve’s Garden and
Flowers Galore Place Mats.

Spring Quilt Market, Salt Lake City

Finally! Eve's Garden pattern will be released at Quilt MarketI am excited to be leaving for Quilt Market in Salt Lake City tomorrow.  Joanne, Gina and I are almost packed and ready to go and it is sure to be an exciting trip for us all.  Joanne and Gina have never experienced Quilt Market before, and most of you probably haven’t either.  Quilt Market is solely a trade show for quilt and fabric shops to see what is new in the quilting world.   I will be introducing four new patterns at quilt market, including this quilt called Eve’s Garden.

Market gives me the opportunity to view the latest fabric lines, tools, patterns and color trends for the upcoming year.  I know I will be inspired by what I see.  If at all possible, I will update my blog while we are there with photos of the show.  You will be amazed at the sheer size of Quilt Market if I can capture it in my photos.

I look forward to spending time with Rana who has just designed a new pattern using my Norme Leaves Galore template.  I met Rana last November at Quilt Festival in Houston.  Rana has just started her pattern design company, and this will be her first Quilt Market!  Congratulations!

I also hope to network with some of the fabric and batting companies to rally support for the Be Like Brit quilt making effort.  Be like Brit is a charity organization that is building an orphanage in Haiti in memory of Brittany who was lost in the Haitian Earthquake last year.  Brits family would like 100 quilts for the beds at the orphanage.  Joanne and I will be helping with this effort, securing supplies and volunteers for the quilt making event in June.  Check out BeLikeBrit.org online for a walk through of the proposed new orphanage!

Off to do a final packing.  Talk to you in my next post from Quilt Market!  Sue

Fun at MQX East

MQX East was a great success for Sue Pelland Designs.  It was my first time in a huge double booth, and my first time introducing Joann Bertrand to the Quilt show world!  Joann has just started sewing with me, trying to get a  load of samples and patterns ready for Quilt Market in Salt Lake City.  Joanne is an old friend with kids the same ages as mine and she lives just 5 minutes down the street.  I am excited to introduce Joann to all of you, so stop in our booth at Quilt Market in May,  Quilter’s Unlimited (Chantilly, VA)  in June or Mancuso, Oaks PA in September!  I will be taking a break from shows in July and October, as my sister Gina is getting married in July, and my daughter and I will be traveling to Europe in August!!

This is one of my new patterns!

I will be adding detailed instructions on making a poinsettia to the website in May.  I have been working on a placemat pattern, and the poinsettia was hard to cut with the 3″ template until I figured out this great new trick!!  Now the poinsettia is even easier than in my Christmas Ribbons pattern…so if you had trouble making the poinsettia before, this will make it simple and more beautiful.   I just finished all the photos for the pattern, and will post instructions under tips and tricks as soon as I am able to get it done in website form!

Until then, here is a preview of the placemat pattern, with three flower options:  Poinsettia, Daisy and Sunflower.  Wish me luck getting all four new patterns finished and printed for Spring Quilt Market, Salt Lake City in three weeks!

Until then, I will be stitching like crazy…Sue

My New Elna Excellence

Many years ago, Mom and I had a quilt shop, and we sold Elna sewing machines. Today, I am sewing on an Elna again! I was at the New Jersey Quilt Fest and had time to sit down at the Elna Excellence and work with it for a while. WOW!!! Do I love this machine! Cathy Racine at Charlton Sewing Center in Charlton, MA had shown it to me a few days earlier, but I didn’t really have time to sit and sew. At the show I was convinced I HAD to have it, soooooo, it arrived last Friday and I have been having fun ever since!!

I love my new ELNA!

I’m off to my quilting guild, but just wanted you to know that I am still here, just very busy sewing up some new samples so you can see some new patterns for Quilt Festival in Salt Lake City.

Also, I am not in stock on the grace true grips and the goddess sheets if you need any!

New Jersey Quiltfest

Having fun in New Jersey demonstrating Leaves Galore and the Quilter’s Chalk Line! Come by booth 312 to see my sister Gina and I. You will enjoy seeing what we have been collaborating on! Gina is an artist, and my templates have gotten her inspired to enter OUR world and paint with fabric! I will upload photos as soon as I get home.

Until then, have fun playing with curves!

Serpentine edge quilts….easy with Leaves Galore!

Dear Sue, I am interested in trying the ruler on the outside borders of a quilt for a scalloped look, or should I say a more serpentine edge…have you tried using the rulers for a serpentine edges? Any helpful hints would be great…

Serpentine edge made with the 8" Leaves Galore Template

8" serpentine edge

Dear Linda, I have used the 8″ curve for a serpentine edge and it came out beautifully! Above is a photo of the finished quilt. Isn’t it smashing!! Not only did I use the 8″ curve for the serpentine edge, but I mirrored this curve as my vine for the vine and leaf border. So here is how I did it….

I made a pattern out of cheap fabric (I used 99c muslin fabric from Joann’s).   You could also use exam roll paper, or other roll paper, but I like using fabric! I cut out the width of each border of the quilt (just two, not all four). Don’t worry about the length, as long as it is longer than the quilt. Most of the time the borders are different sizes and you need to figure each one individually. I lay the fabric over the actual borders, folding ONE end of the border on a 45 degree angle to miter the corner. Once I have ONE end of each border mitered, I can remove the fabric from the quilt to work on the curves. Doing this on fabric
allows you to visualize what the quilt edge will look like, without any math! Now measure the quilt to find the center. Measure away from the miter on the faux border to mark the center point. This center mark will help you to adjust the curves.

I like to end my borders with a graceful, large round curve. This is the easiest type of corner to bind. You can accomplish this using any of the large curves, 5″, 6″ or 8″ on the three templates! I’m sure you mathematicians could figure this out for each size border and each size curve, but hands on work for me! I have always just done it by eye.

Starting at the mitered end of each border, Mark a curve so that the end of the curve ends on the miter line.

Muslin faux border

Faux border cut with the 8" curve

Does this give the corner that you want? If not, you can move the template away from the miter as much as you want, then connect the lines with another curve segment. This gives an even more rounded corner. Now stack the two faux borders together matching up the miter, and cut through both borders with the curved template. Keep moving the template along the border to make an 8″ ( 6″ or 5″) serpentine edge.

Lay the faux borders over the actual quilt to see how the other end works. How much are you off to make your second end look exactly like your first mitered ends? How do you end so that the corners look exactly the same? This depends on the length of your border. Some are easy, some are not. You may be slightly off or really off! You have to judge whether you need more or fewer curves to get them to end symmetrically. Either take pleats in the fabric to reduce the size of some of the curves, or cut through some of the curves and increase the length of the curves. Whichever you need to do, do it evenly across the border. For example, if you need to reduce the curves by 4″ overall, and you have 8, 8″ curves making up your border, you can take a 1/4″ pleat out of the center of each 8″ curve. If you need to expand by the same 4″, you can cut the center of each curve and separate them by 1/2″. Adjust the faux borders as needed to fit the quilt exactly. You will never notice this in the final cut if you adjust them a little here and a little there. Now you can mark your quilt. Use a chalk wheel with iron erase chalk inside (or another marking tool for a white border). Trace the adjusted curves on the quilt top. Mark all four borders.

I stitched around this line with a stay stitching, then put my binding on without cutting the edges first. This gives the quilt stability, and reduces stretching. Your binding needs to be cut on the true bias to go around these curves smoothly. Your binding will lay nice and flat. After putting on your binding, cut the excess border fabric with your template.

You can still cut these borders with the template, even though you have adjusted some of the curves. Lay your quilt over your cutting mat ( it is great if you have a mat the size of your table!) Lay the template over the marked border. Cut each curve slowly and adjust the template as needed to follow your marked line.

Remember, your marked line is correct, not your template, so you will have to constantly shift your template during cutting. You could also cut with scissors, but I am much more accurate and cut a much smoother curve with the template in hand.

In the brown quilt photos, you will notice that I used a piping along the
binding edge. This is made using Susan Cleveland’s PIPING HOT BINDING tool and method. I LOVE THIS METHOD!!

Susan Cleaveland's Piping Hot Binding Method

The piping gives the quilt a really tailored, custom look.

I hope this tutorial helps you make beautiful serpentine edges with your Leaves
Galore Templates!! Please post pictures on my website when you are done, I would
love to see your quilts! Thanks, Sue
